A Few Dead Men – Setting: Cape Blomidon

Cape Blomidon is a headland located on the Bay of Fundy coast in Kings Country, near Darcy’s hometown of Wolfville, Nova Scotia. Headlands are characterized by high, breaking waves, rocky shores, intense erosion, and steep sea cliffs.

I attended university in Wolfville — back in the day — and I visited this Cape as part of my geology class. Geologists are fascinated by this area, since it’s comprised of sedimentary sandstone, even though it’s connected to a mountain range made up of basalt.

This cape’s distinctive reddish-colored cliffs reach up more than 300 feet over the water. English-speaking settlers called it Cape Porcupine, however the common term used was Cape Blowmedown, from which Blomidon is derived.

Darcy has special childhood memories about this windy place.

Excerpt: A Few Dead Men

“Cape Blomidon rose up like a chunk of red clay carved by a giant hand. The tide was out, and the sandstone headlands angled sharply down to the rocky shore. Slate gray water pulsed restlessly toward the horizon.

Her father would take her and Isabel to this place when they were children. Not often, but sometimes. After fierce, hushed voices hissed behind slammed doors.

Mommy’s sad today, their father would say. She needs to be alone.

So they would drive to this stretch of land, where she and her sister would run and dance and giggle, pretending they were wild fairies, and their father would stare gloomily out at the water until it was time to go.

Today there was something unsettling about the gusts of wind that whipped Darcy’s hair and blew cloud shadows across the ground. It left her feeling exposed, trapped in the vastness of space. She was lonely down in her soul.”

Hey Nancy! Looks like you’re doing really well. I love this idea of your book party. I wish I could hang out more and play all the games. But you scheduled your book party during the week of my kids’ February vacation. What is that all about? Didn’t you think to ask me first? 🙂

I really love the recipe idea, too. This is very creative and I wish you great success on your book!
