We lived in Sydney, Nova Scotia for a while, and at that time I was very active in my local church. Those church ladies knew how to cook, and could whip up dinner for 300 people without blinking an eyelash. This was one of the recipes I discovered through them, and people ask me for it all the time. The sauce is also delicious with baked ribs. A true classic!

Sweet and Sour Meatballs

1 ½ lbs. lean ground beef

½ cup milk

½ cup bread crumbs

1 egg, beaten

Salt and pepper to taste

Mix all of the above together and form 1 inch meatballs. Brown meatballs in a frying pan in batches over medium heat and place in greased casserole dish.

Sauce Ingredients:

1 cup ketchup

½ cup water

3 Tbsp. brown sugar

4 Tbsp. vinegar

1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce

3 Tbsp. soy sauce

1 Tbsp. cornstarch

1 onion, sliced

Mix together with whisk. Pour over browned meatballs. Top with onion slices. Cover. Bake in 325 oven for 1 ½ hours. Serve over rice or noodles.

This sounds good, even for a picky meatball maker like me. LOL I like that milk is used in this recipe, because that’s what Italians use. The sweet will appeal to my husband, so going to give this a try.

Hey Nancy, my parents make a version of this every year for Christmas Eve. We are usually to frantic and busy to make it from scratch but we just might have to give this a try! Sounds fantastic.

You can make it ahead of time, throw it in the freezer, then just defrost and bake. Voila!

Making meatballs from scratch is time consuming, but well worth it 😉
