One of the most influential people in my life is Nancy Drew, my favorite brainy, bold girl detective. I always loved books and was an avid reader growing up–we’re talking the mid to late sixties–but Nancy opened my eyes to a new world of possibilities. Thanks to Nancy, I realized I could be independent and daring and still be a girl. Imagine that!

I took a piece of Nancy with me into adulthood, and her influence hasn’t waned. She lives on in each of my four –soon to be five– published mystery novels. The heroines of each book are Nancy Drew wannabes.

I’m also on an eternal search for the remaining 11 books in the original hardcover series of 56. And thanks to a group of similar-minded Nancy Drew fan (atics) like myself, I have been introduced to other girls’ series books that I missed growing up — Cherry Ames, Judy Bolton and the Dana Girls — which I’ve started collecting also.

ndsbansd2014I’ve travelled and made new friends thanks to the Nancy Drew Sleuths annual conventions, where we walk in Nancy Drew’s footsteps set in a real location. We don’t chase villains or sleuth for secret passageways, but we search for missing books, trade stories and have a lot of fun.

This year’s Sleuth Con takes place in San Diego. For more information, click here!

I took a literacy class as well as a children’s literature class this year in my Masters of Education program this year. Some of the most influential books in our lives are those read we read as adolescents. It’s like a first love. For me, those special books were about Tudor history (“Brief Gaudy Hour”), dogs (Albert Payson Terhune’s “Lad”series) and special objects (“The Borrowers” series). Like Nancy Drew for you, they continue to fuel my interests and they haunt me still. Denise

I know, these books bring back our childhood, like old friends. 🙂

I wish I could go as it would nice to meet you. I do not fly and I would have liked to go to the last one, but my husband wound up in the hospital and then a nursing home. We still have medical bills to pay and those come first. I live near Judy Bolton country and will give tours to those who wish to visit other than in October or tax time.

So sorry about your husband’s illness. I hope that you’ll attend the next conference that’s closer to home, it would be nice to meet you too!

I’d love to attend a convention but considering I’m in Aus, unless y’all come here there is no chance of me getting to one 😦

You never know, we’re going to Hawaii next year. I’d love to see Australia! (Mind you, it would take a few years to save some $$) LOL!

Talk to me ;)
